Base Power builds and operates a network of home batteries that provide backup during outages and support the electric grid. Its teams work across battery hardware, manufacturing, software, installation, and electricity service. Based in Austin, Base offers home energy and backup plans, utility partnerships, and commercial electricity in Texas; availability and service models vary by location.
We backed a power company built around distributed batteries and software. Each home battery can protect a household while helping the wider grid manage changing demand. Our April 2025 investment memo described the opportunity to build a utility from the customer outward.
The thesis depends on execution across the whole system: battery design, manufacturing, permitting, installation, and orchestration. Zach Dell and Justin Lopas brought together engineers and operators with experience at Tesla, SpaceX, and Anduril to tackle that work. a16z co-led the Series B and participated in the subsequent Series C and Series D.
The founders met during an Anduril factory tour, when Dell was at Thrive Capital and Lopas led manufacturing. They began exploring how batteries placed at homes could serve both residents and the grid.

Base describes a fully in-person team, with most roles based in Austin. Working near the product and one another is central to its stated work model.
Employees are expected to spot problems, act on them, and take responsibility for the result instead of waiting for someone else to intervene.

The work spans batteries, dispatch software, grid services, partnerships, and installation operations. Teams connect those pieces into infrastructure that works at a home.
The careers FAQ describes an intense environment with high output and fast decisions. Base is explicit that the level of commitment will not suit everyone.

Technical interviews assess how candidates approach problems, explain tradeoffs, and collaborate. An on-site visit combines technical and behavioral conversations.
Base invites applicants from nontraditional backgrounds and emphasizes what they have built and how they think.
Base’s field careers page describes engineers using electricians’ feedback to make systems clearer and easier to install. Installation experience feeds back into hardware design.
Field employees can build energy-storage expertise with mentorship from Master Electricians. Base presents a progression from Apprentice to Master and handles scheduling and customer sourcing for its crews.
Our team takes pride in building a system to help families stay powered when there is an outage.

Base describes small teams of generalists working directly with the founders on financing, partnerships, market entry, and cross-team programs. The business operations role emphasizes building a process that can eventually run on its own.
The values published with Base’s roles ask teammates to give candid feedback, receive it with humility, and make decisions with incomplete information while staying open to changing their minds.
