Why we invested

In a market where no one can build a data moat — law firms will never let a vendor train on privileged work product — we argued that being the institutional default is the moat. We published that thesis in September 2025; an a16z-led $160M round in Harvey was reported five weeks later.

The argument was that brand compounds in legal the way network effects compound elsewhere: each white-shoe firm that signs makes the next one likelier. It followed that Harvey's low day-to-day usage at many firms was not the problem it looked like — in a vertical running on trust and patience, being installed and unlikely to be ripped out beats being heavily used.

Product story

2022
A cold email on the Fourth of July.

Winston Weinberg, then a first-year litigation associate at O'Melveny & Myers, and his roommate Gabe Pereyra tested GPT-3 on landlord-tenant questions pulled from Reddit. According to TechCrunch's account, two of three practicing attorneys said they would send 86 of 100 answers with no edits. They emailed Sam Altman on 4 July 2022, spoke with him that morning, and took their first check from the OpenAI Startup Fund.

Culture

How we work

How we work ↗

Simplicity

Our technology is complex. Our customers' problems are complex. Our solutions can't be. Complexity appreciates, and simplicity scales — so we obsess over first principles and apply them to every decision, big and small.

Decisiveness

AI moves fast. There's no time for overanalysis or ivory tower thinking. We have a bias for action and we'd rather make mistakes than become complacent. We make the call, course-correct, and learn as we go.

Job's Not Finished

There is always more we can do to solve for our customers, and we know it. Harvey is an intense culture — we hire people who thrive on that intensity, who push each other for excellence. We're never satisfied with the status quo.

3+ days per week in one of 16 global offices, with select roles hired remote and marked as such.

In his June 2026 Sourcery interview, Winston Weinberg said more than 200 employees were lawyers. Many work as legal engineers and forward-deployed engineers across product and go-to-market teams. Winston Weinberg on Sourcery, June 2026 ↗
