About the role

Posted Aug 27, 2026

Fenris Creations is seeking a Technical Director to lead the technical direction of Core Technology and CARBON — Fenris Creations's shared game development platform spanning engine runtime, rendering, graphics, tools, pipelines, and developer experience.

In this role, you will set the technical direction for CARBON, ensuring it evolves as a high-leverage, modern platform that creates meaningful value for game teams across Fenris Creations. The ideal candidate brings deep game engine expertise across both runtime and tooling, experience in rendering and graphics, a practical belief in AI-assisted development, and a view of open source as both a near-term execution priority and a long-term strategic advantage.

Reporting to the Senior Development Director of Core Technology, you will translate product vision and organizational priorities into clear technical direction and execution. You will directly manage technical leaders across Graphics, Runtime, and Tools, maintaining visibility into the health and opportunities across the department while keeping teams aligned on a coherent engineering direction.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You will contribute through architecture, technical guidance, and code review, while focusing primarily on raising the effectiveness and goals of the engineers and leaders around you.

The position is located in Reykjavík, Iceland.
  • Define and drive the technical direction for CARBON across runtime, graphics, rendering, tools, pipelines, and shared developer technology.
  • Collaborate closely with the Senior Development Director of Core Technology to translate product vision and priorities into clear technical strategy and execution.
  • Lead and develop technical leaders across Graphics, Runtime, and Tools, strengthening quality, alignment, and team growth.
  • Provide architectural guidance across CARBON, ensuring great decisions around performance, scalability, maintainability, and developer experience.
  • Guide the department in adopting AI-assisted development in practical, high-value ways that improve speed, iteration, and engineering effectiveness.
  • Shape CARBON's open-source direction to increase platform leverage, accessibility, and long-term relevance.
  • Communicate technical direction, tradeoffs, risks, and opportunities across the organization.
  • Significant senior technical leadership experience in game development.
  • Deep game engine expertise across runtime systems, rendering or graphics, and developer tooling.
  • Proven ability to define technical direction and align multiple teams around a coherent engineering vision.
  • People leadership experience across senior engineers, technical leads, or engineering managers.
  • Conviction in the value of AI-assisted and open-source development, with the judgment to apply both strategically and practically.
  • A pragmatic, growth-oriented leadership style with a bias toward learning, experimentation, and solution-finding within real-world constraints.
  • Experienced enough as an engineer to lead with credibility through technical judgment, architecture, and code review.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to convey complex technical topics clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • The challenge of working on ambitious projects with amazingly smart and creative co-workers.
  • A multicultural work environment that encourages growth, creativity and innovation.
  • Double work station setup and flexible work environment
  • An active fun division that hosts regular events.
  • An excellent canteen that offers a weekly breakfast and lunch menu as well as drinks and snacks.
  • Discretionary quarterly and annual performance sharing plan.
  • Annual sports grant.
  • A mobile phone as well as a mobile usage package.
  • Home internet.
  • A conditional monthly transportation grant.
  • Work environment that focuses on employee well-being.
  • On-site doctor, free of charge as well as other on-site services at a discounted price.
  • Relocation Package.
